2024 Winter / Spring Season of Live & About – 13th Season

A Journey in Musical Languages across the Spectrum of Music-Theatre

Through Performance & Conversation

Live & About  - 2024 Winter / Spring 2023 Season

We had a very successful Fall 2023 Season for our “Live & About” series and we have put together another eclectic program for the Winter / Spring 2024 Season with Outings to five different productions in the DC area. As in past years we plan to do midweek evening shows and weekend matinees for each Outing. We will end the Spring season with a special Cabaret featuring our company Artists.

“Live & About” is a community engagement subscription series curated by the company to different DC area theaters and shows that represent a variety of genres from opera and musicals to cabaret and mixed-media events.

Participants enjoy the experience of attending performances as a group, expanding their appetites and critical appreciation for new forms, and supporting diverse large and smaller companies in our community. After each show, group members deepen their experience by engaging in conversation in a social gathering to better understand the deeper intentions of the show’s creators.

We have arranged the Winter / Spring 2024 Season on a subscription basis with our group discounts to five different productions which we will attend each month from February to June. We will end the Spring season with a special Cabaret featuring our company Artists.

If interested in subscribing to the series, please contact us directly to arrange payment and determine which performance you plan to attend for each Outing.                         Please contact us at info@newmusictheatre.org

I hope you will join us for this season.

This is the schedule for our 2024 Winter / Spring Season:

February

Merrily We Roll Along

by Keegan Theatre

1742 Church St NW, Washington DC

Thursday, February 15 @ 8:00 pm

or

Sunday, February 18 @ 3:00 pm

Every theater seems to be reinventing and celebrating Stephen Sondheim, the lyricist and composer who arguably changed Broadway’s story telling style. He teamed up with George Furth in Merrily We Roll Along, which was not successful in its initial productions. But now the world seems to have caught up to the charm and poignancy of this work which turns the traditional showbiz musical on its head in this thrilling and compelling Broadway fable about friendship, compromise, and the high price of success. Sondheim music and lyrics expertly blend the excitement and energy of a backstage musical with an emotional contemporary story about the importance of staying true to one’s ideals.

   March

Private Jones

at Signature Theatre

4200 Campbell Ave, Arlington, VA

Wednesday, March 6 @ 7:30 pm

or

Sunday, March 10 @ 2:00pm

A gripping, inspiring and unexpectedly funny world premiere musical adventure based on a true story about a deaf Welsh sniper in World War I. With rousing songs and an innovative soundscape, and featuring a cast of hearing, Deaf and hard-of-hearing actors, Private Jones is an exhilarating musical experience unlike anything else.

                                                       April

                                        The Nance

                                                  at 1st Stage

1524 Spring Hill Rd, Tysons, VA

                                   Thursday, April 11 @ 7:30 pm

                                                          or

                                     Sunday, April 14 @ 2:00 pm

Directed by Nick Olcott, this witty, Tony Award-winning play, filled with music, dance, and comedy sketches, introduces us to Chauncey Miles, a gay burlesque performer at the Irving Place Theater. The Nance recreates the naughty, raucous world of burlesque’s heyday and tells the backstage story of Chauncey and his fellow performers. At a time when it was easy to play gay and dangerous to be gay, Chauncey’s uproarious antics on the stage stand out in marked contrast to his offstage life. A “funny but bittersweet portrait of a vanished era”.

May

The Return of Eva Perón: Momia en el closet

 at GALA Hispanic Theatre

3333 14th St NW, Washington, DC

Thursday, May 16 @ 7:30pm

or

Sunday, May 19 @ 2:00 pm

In this dark musical comedy fueled by tantalizing lyrics and the seductive allure of tango, waltz, and salsa, historical intrigue meets spine-chilling entertainment. We saw Evita in the Fall 2023 season and now we follow Eva Perón into the afterlife when her preserved corpse ignites political scandals, clandestine affairs, and mysterious murders, exposing the intense love between Evita and the working class and her mesmerizing spiritual power as Argentina's most revered icon. In Spanish with English surtitles.

                                                        June

                             The Matchbox Magic Flute

at Shakespeare Theatre Company: Klein Theatre

450 7th St NW, Washington, DC

                                     Wednesday, June 12 @ 7:30pm

                                                              or

                                           Sunday, June 16 @ 2:00 pm

In her acclaimed signature style, Mary Zimmerman conceives a brand new theatrical adaptation of Mozart’s beloved opera. Playful and imaginative, it’s big music in a small space. This “matchbox” presentation of The Matchbox Magic Flute features a cast of 10 and an orchestra of five—following the fantastic adventures of Prince Tamino and Princess Pamina. With dragons, a man who transformed into a bird, trials by fire and water, and underground corridors. Day and Night do battle.
