performer, poet, composer
Laura is a performer in Opera, Oratorio, Musical Theater, and contemporary Christian music. She is also a poet, composer, worship leader and sometimes vocal teacher.
Laura has soloed with many major choruses in the Washington area. She completed a tour with the Choral Arts Society in Buenos Aires, Argentina where she soloed in Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana at the famed Teatro Colon, and in the Faure Requiem in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. In addition she has soloed with the Choral Arts Society in concert of American music and in the North American premier of John Tavener’s Lament for Jerusalem. Of this performance The Washington Post said, “Soprano Laura Lewis maintained her creamy tone all the way up, when phrases kept floating ecstatically heavenward.”
Laura also soloed extensively with the Washington Bach Consort in such works as Bach’s Easter Oratorio, and Cantata 51, Respighi’s Laud to the Nativity, and Britton’s Ceremony of Carols. She also performed with the Washington Chorus singing the soprano role in the Bach B Minor Mass and Montiverdi’s Vespers of 1610 and was the featured soloist in their Christmas concert and on their album, “Glorious Splendor” released by Gothic Records in October 2003. Her performances with the Cathedral Choral Society include Copland’s In the Beginning, Mozart’s Mass in C Minor, Bach’s Mass in G, and Paul McCartney’s Ecce Cor Meum. With the New Dominion Chorale, she soloed in the Bach B Minor Mass and the world premiere of Magnificat by Tom Beverage. She performed the soprano role of Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Cathedral Choral Society and Washington Ballet, and with Cantate Singers, and has soloed in many other works including Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Creation, and Respighi’s Laud to the Nativity, Laura also soloed in major festivals including The Schütz Festival, The Mozart Festival, the Russian Festival and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival.
In addition to her concert performances, Laura has performed many opera roles. With Washington Opera, Laura performed the roles of Xenia in Boris Goudonov, and Iris in Semele. She sang the leading role of Pamina in The Magic Flute with Victor Borge conducting. She also performed leading roles with “In” Series in The Marriage of Figaro, Barbarillo de Lavapies, Fatal Song, and many other productions. Laura performed leading roles with Annapolis Opera in The Marriage of Figaro and Carmen, and with Northern Virginia Opera in L’oca di Cairo. Un Giorno di Regno and Madaleine.
