Jeffrey Gwaltney

Vocalist, Instructor, Thesbian, and Performer

Jeff joins the Alliance, first and foremost, to actively contribute to bringing performance art to the DC area during his residency here. He returns to the DC area in his second year as a member of the Domingo-Cafritz young artist program, in conjunction with the Washington National Opera. During his time in the area, Jeff has been able to perform with several companies in the greater Washington area. At the Kennedy center, Jeff has performed on the main stage in WNO’s recent production of Lucia di Lammermoor, as Normanno. He is scheduled to sing with the National Symphony Orchestra in a concert version of Beethoven’s Fidelio, and he will be engaged again by WNO as Abdallo in a new production of Verdi’s Nabucco. He has also performed several times on the Millennium stage in a variety of opera based programs. Last year he made his Baltimore debut as the Armed Man in Mozart’s Magic Flute with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and also was a featured soloist with the Choral Arts Society of Washington in the Mozart Requiem.

Recently, Jeff was seen at the Glimmerglass Music Festival as Officer Snow in Jeanine Tesori’s Blizzard in Marblehead Neck. A successful world premier with a libretto by Tony Kushner. He also performed the tenor lead of Giasone in Cherubini’s Medea, an opera that had not been performed in the states for 20 years. Other notable performances include: Don José in Carmen, the title role in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Rodolpho in La Boheme, and Turiddu in Cavallaria Rusticana.
Jeff came to Washington from the Charlotte, NC area where he taught in a high school music program for three years prior to his engagement with WNO. He has a passion for arts education, and wishes to see fine art made more accessible to a wider range of the public. This is the primary motivation for his affiliation with the Alliance. A hope that through performance of new and timeless works in a comfortable environment, audiences may become more open to a wider performance art experience in general. Art has the capability to bring sublime and profound messages to open minds. Jeff hopes that through collaboration with the Alliance and other organizations like it, he will be able to share his passion for art to a wider range of the public.
